A simple moving average is nothing but an arithmetic mean of a set of values. For example, to calculate a five-day simple moving average, the closing price of the past five days is added and divided by five. When the price crosses above the EMA, it is considered to be a buy signal, and when the price crosses below the EMA, it is considered to be a sell signal. Traders may also look for crossovers between different EMAs, such as the 10-period EMA crossing above the 50-period EMA, which can indicate a strong trend reversal.
